EPTA Review

Review | December 2024

Beautifully presented and illustrated, this new primer is worth considering alongside the numerous beginner books available at this time. Pianist, teacher, and educator Maria João Lopes has devised this starter piano book which cannot fail to appeal to all young children with its delightful illustrations as it sends young pianists on their journey. All basic theory is gently covered, with space for the children to draw answers to questions. Beginning with two fingers on two black keys and progressing through seconds, thirds, hands together, all notes of one octave on each hand, chords on each hand, dynamics, and accidentals carefully explained, the volume unfolds with charming tunes for solo and duet. A page of stickers gives added involvement to the theory sections. By the end of the book, young children will have covered much of the basic musical stepping stones of a first term at the piano, with the ability to grasp unusual chords as well as simple melodies. Well-planned, this colourful volume teaches a new element on each page and there is only one flaw, with the Grim and Red duet spread over four pages, requiring a page turn in the middle where it could surely have had a slightly smaller font to stay on two pages. Pedagogically sound, Lopes clearly knows how to reach the hearts of young pianists with vivid colour and lively musical material. A valuable addition to beginners’ repertoire.
